  1. 2004.170.015 - 1652. WHS 2004.170.015 History of the Leonard Family 1652 Old Dartmouth's Connections with the Famous Leonard Family In 1652, James and Henry Leonard with one Ralph Russell came from Pontipool, Monmcritshire(?), Wales and settled at Taunton. They were attracted to this location by the bog iron in that part of Taunton now known as Raynham. Here they built iron works and organized a stock company. Later Henry Leonard moved to New Jersey and tradition says that Ralph Russell moved to Dartmouth, which is absolutely without foundation. There is no record to show that Ralph Russell ever owned land in Dartmouth or resided there. In 1661, Dartmouth had but three residents and in 1662 the number increased to seven who were Shaw, Hathaway, Cuthbert, Spooner, Samuel Jenney, John Russell, Thomas Pope or Ralph Earle. If Ralph Russell had been the owner of a forge as tradition states and one of seven or eight men in the town of Dartmouth who owned taxable property, the tax collector would undoubtedly have been able to have located him and returned his tax to the Plymouth government. By some, it has also been claimed that John Russell was the son of Ralph. This also cannot be proved as John Russell previous to dwelling in Dartmouth resided in Marshfield. The land he owned there was purchased from one Ralph Partrich as the Plymouth County Deeds record. On Mar. 20, 1661, John Russell bought of Edward Gray, attorney for Miles Standish, his share of the town of Dartmouth for 42 pounds. Thus neither in Marshfield nor in Dartmouth was the land which John Russell owned any which he inherited from Ralph Russell. No matter how pleasing it might to Dartmouth people to believe that one of its first settlers was a man who had been a business partner of certain members of the Leonard family, they must forego the pleasure and wait until a later date for the actual occurrence of Dartmouth having business relations with a member of this enterprising family. In 1789, Josiah Leonard was engaged by Lemuel Milk and William Gifford to run their forge, which was built upon the present site of the lower mill, owned by the Westport Manufacturing Company. For his services in operating the forge Leonard was given a third interest in the business. The forge was operated for about six years and then sold to William Rotch, Jr. The family of which Josiah Leonard was a member continued for seven generations to work at the Taunton-Raynham works and ever held a prominent place in the community. Eliphalet Leonard in 1775 made at Easton, the first bar of American steel. During King Philip's war, Leonard's blockhouse is said to have been attack and two young women who had sought shelter within were killed and buried beneath the door stone so that the savages would not exhume the bodies and dismember them. As the iron works prospered, the family became very wealthy and lived in great magnificence upon fine estates. Pilgrim Republic Pages 528 & 529 The Descendants of John Russell of Dartmouth, Mass.
